Scott Olson

My work consists mainly of contemporary interpretations of traditional themes such as still-life, florals, and the landscape. It is characterized by bold color and the subtle nuance of line and texture. I work in many different media and feel the work is most successful when a combination of techniques is involved. I prefer to work on paper, using both hand-made cotton rag papers and Japanese rice papers. I start with the hand application of either watercolor or oil paint. The simple shapes and colors are laid down first, then I usually incorporate a monotype intaglio plate to introduce subtle linear and textural elements. Following this I re-work the entire piece with oil paint. My work is inspired by both nature and man-made objects in nature.
