My drawings at first glance appear to be very detailed, but they are detailed in a simplistic manner giving it a minimalist style. I am not duplicating images I see but rather conveying the mood and strength of that moment. Although there is much preparation before each piece is started, and most are very controlled images, they seem to take on a life and feel of their own. Drawings are created using graphite pencil or charcoal pencil. Regardless of the size of the piece or the type of paper used, the technique and process is relatively the same. I start each drawing with the hardest lead (light lead) and continue with layers of pencil work using softer lead (dark lead) finally finishing with the softest lead. Each layer of pencil work is the foundation for the next layer and the combination of all the layers of pencil work is what gives me the desired texture and effect I want. I continue working and redrawing all areas of the piece until I find a very satisfying balance. This method is time consuming but it is the only way of achieving this particular effect.
