Work by Madelyn C. Ricks, 2005

In 1997, when Madelyn Ricks switched from making large-scale pottery to small sculptures and jewelry in glass beads, she became fascinated with the art of off-loom weaving. Today, her creations are widely recognized for their innovative forms, vibrant colors, and distinctly creative patterns. Her works are comprised of approximately 300 tiny glass beads per square inch, with bold patterns and graceful, fluid forms. Madelyn uses the Peyote stitch – which is similar to sewing the beads with needle and thread – to create her contemporary sculptures and jewelry. She credits other cultures – including their unique use of patterned fabrics – and various design trends such as the Art Deco period, as her greatest influences. Madelyn holds a bachelor of arts degree from Michigan State University and has been a fulltime studio artist since 1981. She recently moved back to Florida after living many years in the mid-west. She exhibits her work at festivals, galleries and museums throughout the United States.
