John Whipple

My sculpture work usually starts by rummaging through my collection of objects that I have found scrounging in antique stores and markets in our travels. I enjoy the surprise of matching odd combinations of materials and the challenge to make the finished piece feel as if it had always been that way. My sculpture career started with my artcar, which many people from Winter Park may remember. I had carved a few folky crude characters on it and really enjoyed the tactile experience compared to painting. The work has evolved over the years as I've begun to incorporate more types of materials and played with combining the pieces in my parade series. Most of the pieces I work on develop over time with pieces and parts strewn all over. Eventually a story emerges and I can compete the piece.
