Jim & Shirl Parmentier

We have been working together in clay for over 40 years. Each piece moves back and forth between the two us to complete all of the intricate steps involved in our work. As nationally recognized potters, we have participated in nearly every major art fair in the county. We are members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Piedmont Craftsmen and Carolina Designer Craftsmen. Our Mars Hill studio is open by appointment where custom orders are always welcome. For the past 10 years we have been members of Ariel Gallery, located in downtown Asheville, one of the most prominent craft co-operative galleries in the country.

We have been making our Pottery together since 1975. We work on our vessels as a team, both in design and in the making of the vessels. The clay body is transformed into vessels using coils and slabs of clays. Our mission with our vessels is first with its form. Form and proportion must fit the flow of the vessel. It must start at the base or the foot and continue through the body of the vessel and up through the neck or the top. With form intact, the vessel has surface alterations and carvings to conform to the shape. The ash glaze will flow into these carvings and crevasses. With this continuity of form, carving and fluid glazes the vessel is complete.
