David Skinner

I am a contemporary landscape painter working out of a studio in the River Arts District of Asheville, North Carolina. I moved to Asheville in 20l4 after spending two years in Ireland on an art residency at the Burren College of Art. My current work is focused on the rural area surrounding Asheville, and the unique light and texture found there. My paintings are creative interpretations of nature that straddle the divide between abstraction and realism. I work in both acrylic and oil paints on either canvas, wood panels or paper and tend to use an enhanced and vibrant palette. I try to keep my brushwork as loose as possible without letting the image dissolve into chaos, which involves a kind of give and take approach to finding resolution in the painting. This visual dance is what keeps me engaged with the process of painting, even after 25 years of dedicated practice.
