George’s Air
Posted on Friday, August 21st, 2009 at 11:20 amDavid: Brent Krueger owner of DC/AC Air/Heat (and a Barter Member) came by this morning. There is no freon leak…the coils are beat up so, after hearing all the options:
1. Remove and acid clean the coils – still may not work well – $850 ($300 barter)
2. Replace air handler – unit is 11 years old – new unit – $1,544 ($400 barter; George offered to pay $500; $644 balance)
3. Replace the whole shebang – not necessary – $3,500-4,000
I’m going with option #2. Unit comes with a 5 year warranty; labor 1 year. Good for at least another 10 years.

Additionally, if the air handler is being replaced, then a point should be made to insure the air filter is easier to get to in the future.
Rereading your post I see you say that “you are going with option 2.” Perhaps that means you’ve already put things in motion. Nevertheless, I do want to repeat that Tim Pittman has always been a very reliable source, particularly when it comes to identifying the right price. I went through something similar with George that involved replacing the unit outside. The barter vendor wanted as much cash as Tim plus several hundred in barter. Too, remember we did a coil cleaning job at Danny’s – we bought the wet/dry vac and a spray nossle for that. Remember? Took all day.
Jen: Well, I’m glad to hear the freon is OK.
Did you call Tim Pittman? He would probably talk with you on the phone. He might even see you this weekend. He would know right off, without seeing anything, if the price you were quoted is right.
The theromstat?
Are the ducts intact in the attic?
If there’s any more work to be done on George’s air, a lock should be put on the door to the air handler. George’s air handler was replaced not long before we bought the place – even if it was manufactured eleven years ago. Every portion of George’s system has been replaced since he’s been there. Dan’s? Not a single piece. Well, a rusted drip pan. Dan’s is a dinosaur. And ours? How old is ours?
So, why is it George has all the trouble. Am I singing an old song? Why in the world is George offering to pay a portion? That is not something I want to do. I don’t like the idea of giving him ‘ownership’ of anything, of giving him a sense that he has a right to something extra.
Five hundred? Divided by twelve? Hmmm…
Do you wash your hair after every visit to George’s?
If there is something you want me to do in all this, let me know.
I would be much more comfortable if you would handle the emotional side of your life as expeditiouslly as you are handling the ‘To Do’s’. If you need help with that, let me know.
