He is getting better; however, the experience has aged him. While he’s definitely older in many ways…skin…appearance…movement, he is still mentally there and willing to do the work of therapy to try and get back some strength and mobility in his legs.
He has been in the in-patient rehab area of Lucerne Pavilion for just over a week. There he gets intensive physical/occupational therapy…about three hours a day, over the course of the day, along with breathing treatments. He has overcome the pnemonia, and has a good team of doctors, nurses, therapists and techs. His legs have potential strength, but are not yet able to support him on his own…today was the first time in a long time, that he stood with a walker with the PT techs on either side.
He shared with me tonight that he wished they would just tell him he’ll be going home in a wheelchair…he seems ready to accept what he has to deal with. I responded by saying, well, they just don’t know that yet, Dad…and reminded him that he has another couple weeks of therapy to find out. His discharge date is August 19, so there is time yet to see just how far along he will get.
As for me…well, with patience, I’m getting used to having an older Dad.
David: Thanks for thinking about Dad.
